Precision technology

R&D test set-up

Reason for development:
  • Need for protective clothing against the effects of chemical agents.
  • Requirement from the textile industry for clothing with special functionality.
  • Research into possibilities for application of nano fibres manufactured using “electro spinning".

Objective:

  • Technological viability research into broad practical application of electro spinning using a functional laboratory set-up.
  • Accumulating knowledge in relation to chemical composition nano fibres and electro spinning.

Aerospace Opto mechanics

Reason for development

  • The requirement for a scientific measuring instrument for detecting infrared radiation outside the atmosphere. Analysis of this radiation indicates whether there is water in the universe and where it can be found.

Objective

  • Designing and detailing the mechanics for an instrument with mirrors and detectors which operate in the approximate temperature range of 2 Kelvin.
  • The instrument must be resistant to the launch speeds, shocks and vibrations.
  • The mirrors must be properly aligned and stable.

Cryogenic design

Reason for development

The Dutch participation in the ALMA project.
Atacama Large Millimeter Array concerns a cluster of more than 60 dish aerials with a 12 metre diameter for studying sub-millimetre radiation from the universe.
As this radiation is fully absorbed by the atmosphere at sea level, the location is a 5000 metre plateau in the Atacama desert in Chilli, one of the driest places on earth.
